Thank you to Medium's Authority Magazine for this fun interview about all things branding! You can read the full interview at the link below. Enjoy!
Don’t pretend to be something you are not. We live in a world of instant communication and information. If you have an inauthentic brand you will be found out. My book breaks down seven bad narratives that lead to an inauthentic brand and helps the reader learn how to embrace all aspects of the brand as positives. Just own it; whatever “it” is. Remember: Let Kanye be Kanye.
As part of our series about how to create a trusted, believable, and beloved brand, I had the pleasure to interview Laura Bull.
Thank you so much for doing this with us Laura! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
It’s my pleasure! Thank you for having me. I guess you could say I have been working with influencers before they were even called “influencers.” I actually fell into the marketing side of the coin when I started in the music industry. I was aiming for an A&R (Artists and Repertoire) job because I had a musical background, but when I landed a marketing role to get my foot in the door, I never looked back. Many people don’t realize how creative and fun marketing actually is because they only see the data and analysis part. When in reality, there’s never a limit to what you can do from a marketing perspective. There are infinite possibilities. As long as you can dream it up, you can make it happen.
I think my creative side inspired my forthcoming book From INDIVIDUAL to EMPIRE: A Guide to Building an Authentic and Powerful Brand (February 4, 2020). I love writing. I’m able to share stories about people I’ve worked with and public figures as well. It just happens naturally while explaining my branding process. My artists, or students for that matter, never looked at me like another suit in the boardroom, and it’s because I could speak their language.
Can you share a story about the funniest marketing mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
Oh man! Are mistakes funny? I guess if enough time has passed. Ha!...
