Top 5 Nonprofit Influencers of 2019

In keeping with the thankful vibes for the month, I wanted to turn the lens around and showcase some wonderful and powerful influencers who have highlighted important charitable causes this year. From poverty and hunger to health epidemics, from war and refugees to human rights, there are plenty of people across the globe who are thankful every day that these extraordinary few have used their powerful voices to bring awareness to their plight. And let’s never forget that one voice, whether world-known or unknown, can be the most advantageous in battle.

Melinda Gates (@melindagates)

The co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has spent many years on the charitable frontlines raising and donating countless millions to end global poverty through healthcare and education. Their impact is palpable. For instance, their decades-long battle against Malaria has shown a historic 60% decrease in cases worldwide. Now, in an editorial penned for TIME Magazine, she is promising a $1 billion investment over the next decade to expand “women’s power and influence in the United States.” She has set her sights on reducing barriers for women in specific industries to allow a greater chance of success. Beth Kanter (@BethKanter)

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” If Beth had a motto, I’m sure this would be it. A social media influencer with a quite impressive following at 360k, Beth uses her powerful voice to help many nonprofits become successful instead of focusing on one specific charitable cause. By helping those who help others, she can affect the masses. An author who has over 35 years of experience with nonprofits, boasts an impressive list of clients including the Gates Foundation.

“Get inspired by everyday people doing extraordinary things to change the world.” By shining the light on the smallest voices around the world making a large impact on their communities, CNN Heroes inspires everyone to fight the impossible while helping to highlight charities that need funding. Each year, nominees from all over the world come together to celebrate each other, their good work, and raise funds. After attending countless award shows in my career, this is always my favorite and has become a family tradition. The issues are vast, from environmental to social reform to injustices to psychological, follow this twitter feed will make you feel good about the world.

The Clooneys

George and Amal Clooney are some of the most impactful voices in our world today…all without the aid of social media. GASP! Seriously though, what efforts are they NOT involved with? Of course, Amal is an international law and human rights lawyer getting her hands dirty on the frontlines, but even before the pair met, they were both traversing the globe on humanitarian crusades. The list of causes they have been involved with is almost endless, from grassroots to full-blown media campaigns: UNICEF, United Way, hunger relief, poverty, equal rights, AIDS, Red Cross, and more. For more about what the two are focused on, head over to the Clooney Foundation for Justice @ and get involved.

JK Rowling (@jk_rowling)

From her early years pre-Potter working for Amnesty International, the author has always maintained outspoken support for the down-trodden. A once impoverished single mother, the self-made billionaire focuses her goodwill on literacy, social reforms, and humanitarian aid. It is said that she lost her place on Forbes’ richest list due to donating an astounding $160 million to charitable foundations and causes. She has publicly stated that she feels a great responsibility for allocating her money and being a vigilant supporter of many great charitable causes, so I bet that number will increase dramatically over the years to come.

Of course, there are too many amazing charitable influencers around the world to list, so I would love to hear your favorites to follow. Who spurns you to action? Are they helping others locally or nationally or globally? What foundations do you feel need the greatest support? Comment below or join the conversation over on my socials. Let’s highlight some winners!

Remember, even though it’s the season of giving, the goal is to make sure everyone can feel thankful throughout the year!

Until next time…
